How does the installation process work? Step-by-step guide
Installing a gas boiler is not just hanging an appliance on the wall. There are requirements to meet, both technical and legal.
First, and most basic: you need a legal natural gas or propane supply that complies with current regulations. No botched jobs. The supply must be active and registered in your name. If you live in a block of flats, make sure the boiler room or the space where the unit will go has enough ventilation. There is no margin for error here: poor ventilation can lead to dangerous build-ups.
You also need a flue to vent the combustion gases outside, either a coaxial outlet or a twin-flow system. And watch out: in many cases, if your building is more than 20 years old, you may have to adapt the flue or even consult the residents’ association. In addition, any boiler installer will ask you to have your electrical installation in good order. Some boilers need a continuous power supply and RCD protection.
For any type of installation you need a purchase invoice and an installation certificate signed by an authorised professional. Your brother-in-law will not do, however handy he is. By law, only an installer authorised by the administration can install a gas boiler.

Installation process step by step
The installation does not usually take more than half a day, but that does not mean it is technically quick. Here we explain everything that happens from the moment the technician walks through your door until they leave with a working boiler.
Preparation
Before fitting anything, the site is inspected. The installer checks the available space, the gas supply, the ventilation and the ducts. If everything is OK, the old boiler (if there is one) is disconnected and the area cleaned. At this point the necessary measurements and calculations are also made: water flow, heat output required, type of use. This is vital because an oversized or undersized boiler can be a serious problem.
The gas pressure is also checked and a decision made on whether adapters or new connections are needed. In a detached house you may have to modify the flue to bring it up to standard. In blocks of flats this is usually already pre-installed.
During the installation
This is where the visible part of the job begins. The boiler installer fixes the unit to the wall and connects the cold and hot water supplies, the gas and the flue pipe. Everything has to be perfectly sealed. Then a gas tightness test is carried out to check there are no leaks. This step is compulsory.
Next comes the electrical connection. Although a boiler may seem to be all about gas, it also needs electricity to work. The thermostat is installed here and, if the customer has asked for it, connected to a home automation system or a mobile phone.
Once connected, the water circuit is filled and the radiators are bled to remove air. Then comes commissioning: switching on, checking temperatures, flow and pressure. If all is well, the installer issues the boiler installation certificate.

Current regulations
Spanish regulations on boiler installations are fairly clear, although they tend to change every few years. In 2026 the Regulation on Thermal Installations in Buildings (RITE) remains in force, requiring every installation to meet certain efficiency, safety and sustainability standards.
The main rule that still applies this year is the obligation to install only condensing boilers in private homes. Open-flue (atmospheric) boilers have been banned for some time. In addition, all boilers must have a minimum efficiency of 92% of the fuel’s net calorific value, which most current models already meet.
Incidentally, the regulations also require users to carry out periodic inspections. The compulsory inspection must be carried out at least every two years and, in some cases, every year, depending on the gas company.
Maintenance tips
A gas boiler is like a car: if you do not look after it, it breaks down. And the worst part is that faults give no warning. That is why basic maintenance every year is so important. The first thing is to bleed the radiators before the cold sets in. This improves the system’s efficiency and avoids annoying noises.
Check the boiler pressure every month, especially in winter. If it is below 1 bar, add water to the circuit. If it is above 2.5, contact a technician. Do not ignore it.
Clean the filters regularly too. Some models make this easy from underneath. If you notice that hot water takes a while to come through or there are pressure drops, you may have limescale or sediment in the heat exchanger. That requires professional attention.
Very important: book an annual service with an authorised technician. As well as being compulsory, it picks up problems before they become expensive or dangerous. Some brands even extend the warranty if the maintenance is done by certified technicians.
