These figures are not estimates or ranges copied from other websites. They come from 233 quotes we prepared for homes in Barcelona and its metropolitan area between 6 September 2026 and 2 October 2026, including the unit, labour and VAT.

The large figure is the middle price: with all quotes sorted from cheapest to most expensive, the one in the middle. "Half" is the band covering the middle half, leaving out the cheapest 25% and the most expensive 25%.

Air conditioning: price by type of system

The price of an air conditioner depends mainly on how many indoor units it has. A 1×1 split cools or heats one room; a multi-split connects two, three or four indoor units to a single outdoor unit.

Reusing the existing installation costs less

In 64 of the 125 air conditioning quotes, an old unit was replaced reusing the existing installation: the location, the pipes and the drain. It shows in the price. When the installation has to be done and gets complicated (long pipes, false ceiling, condensate pump), it goes up.

What pushes the price up

Our price includes up to 3 metres of pipe between the indoor and outdoor units. This is what we found when preparing the quotes:

With new pipework, more than 3 metres were needed (half needed 5 m or more)

With new pipework, 7 metres or more were needed

33%

Where the outdoor unit ends up in a Barcelona flat

One in three goes on the building's roof. It is very common in Eixample and Gràcia buildings, where the unit often cannot hang on the street façade and the balcony is small. Going up to the roof lengthens the pipework and sometimes requires work at height.

What capacity people ask for

65% of indoor units go in the living or dining room and 31% in bedrooms. The most quoted capacity is 3.3 to 3.5 kW, typical for a living room of about 25 m².

Ducted systems: two very different prices

With ducted air conditioning there are two jobs with similar names and very different prices. If the home already has ducts and grilles, the unit is replaced. If not, the whole installation has to be built: lowering plasterboard ceilings, distributing the air to the rooms and, often, running a new electrical line.

Replacing the unit

€3,920

Existing ducts are reused. Middle half between €3,300 and €4,630. 23 quotes.

New installation with building work

€10,230

Unit, ducts, grilles and plasterboard ceilings. Middle half between €8,710 and €13,170. 30 quotes.

In a typical flat, with a 7.1 kW unit (flats up to about 65 m²), the middle price was €9,220 (17 quotes). With 9.5 kW, €11,500.

Where the quotes come from

85% were for homes in the city of Barcelona; the rest came from the metropolitan area (Castelldefels, Badalona, Sant Joan Despí, Mataró, L'Hospitalet…). By district, most came from Gràcia, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and the Eixample.

How we calculated these figures

  • We use every air conditioning, ducted, boiler, gas water heater and electric water heater quote from the last three months (or since 6 September 2026, when we started this record).
  • If we made several versions of the same job for a client, only the last one counts. Test quotes, cancelled quotes and quotes merged into another are removed.
  • We take the first option of each quote, which is the one we recommend. All prices include 21% VAT and are rounded to the nearest ten euros.
  • A price is shown only when there are at least 10 quotes of that type.
  • We publish no personal data: no names, addresses or phone numbers.
  • It is a quote, not the final invoice. They usually match, because extras are identified before quoting, but something may change on site.
  • Most quotes are for Mitsubishi Electric (air conditioning) and Junkers Bosch (boilers), the brands we work with most. Other brands may cost slightly differently.
